The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 – An article setting out the changes to the asbestos at Work regulations

Asbestos Cement products have been extensively used in the construction of all types of buildings, from the early 1900s until their sale and use was prohibited in November 1999.

To work with asbestos cement products, the contractor does not need to be licensed by the HSE but they do need to be ‘Competent’.

There are a number of ways that the client can check whether the contractor is competent:

¨

Have they successfully carried out similar work previously?

¨

Can they provide satisfactory risk assessment and a method statement which follows the advice in our Advice Note and article?

¨

Are they members of a reputable trade association? if roofers this could be the National Federation of Roofing Contractors or the Construction Group of The Rural Design and Building Association.
